A mystery novel set in Merida and Chichen Itza Yucatan around the crucial date of December 21, 2012. The scene in Merida is chaotic and tense. People think that the world is about to end, as it is the end of the Maya long-count calendar. Other people think humanity will evolve to a higher form of consciousness. You wouldn't think these are ideals people would kill to protect, but they do. Thousands of spiritual tourists have descended upon this once-peaceful city, creating chaos.
People die, and die very badly.
New York investigator Miriam Glass teams up with Yucatecan police chief JL Contreras to solve the dramatic murders.
Other characters include William, a shady American expat who lives in a Maya Village, Contreras and his two assistants, all earnest policemen bowled over by the behavior of the spiritual visitors, Martin, who has come to Yucatan to experience the death he so richly deserves, the medical examiner Dr. Poot who calls cadavers "people" and Miriam's friend Mary, a taciturn American nurse.
Leaders of the spiritual groups include Adam Lionheart, of the Pyrolites of Faith, a huge group of doomsdayers who dress in black and use meth, and Dr. Abyssinia Schlossman, queen of the Children of Kukulcan, a peaceful group of people who hope that humanity is about to evolve to a higher consciousness.
The story is set in and around Merida, a lovely five-hundred-year-old colonial city populated by a million souls, eighty-five percent of whom are Maya.

I enjoyed reading this book. I found it is easy to read and exciting. I was quickly engrossed in the story and the characters. The ending was a big surprise; not at all what I had guessed would happen. When I came to the end of the book, I thought, "NO, I want more," not out of disappointment but I hated to say goodbye to the characters that I had grown fond of. I hope there is a sequel as I want to hear more of Miriam and Police Chief Contreras.Great story set in Mérida, Yucatan, a place where every day is an adventure. I highly recommend this book. It is an eye-opener and takes you inside the hearts and minds of the people of Yucatán.
I couldn't put the book down even through the laptop I was reading it on was getting heavy. I don't have a Kindle device but downloaded Kindle for PC to my laptop.

2012 Deadly Awakening edition by Beryl Gorbman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
When I cracked open 2012 Deadly Awakening, it immediately drew me in and swept me back to the Yucatan, where I traveled several times last year while researching the Maya 2012 story. What I most enjoyed about Gorbman's treatment of the subject is her ability to find a nice balance between fact and funny, as she presents an accurate picture of all the types of people interested in 2012, from scientists to loonies to scam artists and beyond. At the same time, she maintains a tongue-in-cheekness that captures the lighter side of all the hype.
More importantly, she does not forget the Maya themselves -- something that happens all too often in stories about 2012 (see the movie by the same name) -- nor delicate social problems presented by the presence of foreigners in the Maya region. For example, one Maya character grumbles, "This is what the Maya have come to, he thought, getting angrier and more depressed by the moment. Servants to f----- tourists who think our history is fascinating and that although we modern Maya are for s---, our ancestors long ago were incredible."
2012 Deadly Awakening is a fun book. Period. The bonus is that is also teaches you about Mérida, Mexico, the people who live there, and some of the remarkable facts surrounding the Maya 2012 story. My only complaint is that the black and white images included in this self-published book do nothing to illustrate the action and even take away from the crackling prose. Warning Reading this book might make you curious enough to book a flight to Mérida.

Pretty neat read, impressed with the story line, I had not expected it, and reading it online with real photos made it so much more plausible. And imparts color and view to the plot. I know there will be lots of 2012 speculative fiction.. but this one is very chilling. Oh no, not a presage, I hope.
Full disclosure, I know the author - but I liked the book more than just because I know Beryl. And I want more --- and I think I am hooked on 2012 fiction now.
A well crafted tale about a potential disaster in the making..Ms. Gorbman writes with great humor about the insanity and chaos that reigns when thousands of hustlers, drug addicts, cult fanatics and assorted misfits descend upon the otherwise tranquil colonial city of Merida. All believing that one way or another life as they know it will change or end on December 21st 2012..It's Mardi Gras, and Carnavale on steroids ..Differing factions with opposing ideas on how exactly the end of days will occur gather at Chichen Itza awaiting the grand event with catastrophic results.. A crime of epic proportions occurs..The Yucatecan detective, and Miriam the legal investigator who try to solve it are very well written as is their complicated relationship. The novel is a great roller coaster ride...Many twists and turns...Really hated it to end....A terrific read..Looking forward to Beryl Gorbman's next book.
I'm interested in the various 2012 theories and bought this book for my . I enjoyed it - interesting characters, intriguing story, quick to read - but then it ended without any of the storylines being resolved. I feel like I wasted my time.
I'd been looking forward to reading Beryl Gorbman's take on the 2012 mysteries to come. She writes with a flair about the history of popular culture, an awareness of the politics of the moment and that Rolling Stones sense of humor that "explains" the numerical mysteries of a world that hasn't quite happened yet. Had she simply picked through some of the more recent writings on 2012 and used some real life examples from the recent past to underscore her points, we could all yawn and complain about how unwieldly is. But she didn't, so we don't. We get caught up in the fast paced action instead. And each time you think you have it figured out...you don't.
Good story, well written, and we all learn some things along the way. Now I want more.
This book was a good read and kept me on my toes all the way through. The details were well researched and added a great deal to my enjoyment, Also, I was able to read it before the big excitement about 2012 was well known which also peaked my interest.
I bought this because I like to support authors from the Yucatan. It started out real well with several story lines developed, but then it suddenly ended. It was as if the auther was told to write so many words and then stopped. I would love to read the sequel if that gives closure.
