For lovers of EROTIC Regency romance with heart.
Lusting after one’s employer is certainly not the done thing when you are a governess. But Miss Abigail Adams cannot seem to help herself...
Abigail Adams, the resident governess of Hartfield Hall, might appear to be a very proper young woman, yet she secretly yearns for excitement to brighten her mundane life. And what she does want, she really shouldn’t long for—Sir Nicholas Barsby, the indecently handsome, charismatic master of Hartfield.
Sir Nicholas Barsby returns home from a tour of the Continent to discover his widowed sister-in-law has employed a decidedly delectable governess for his nieces. When it becomes blatantly apparent that the attraction is mutual, Nicholas ruthlessly decides to present Miss Adams with a thoroughly wicked proposal.
Abigail is initially shocked by Sir Nicholas’s outrageous and highly improper offer to become his mistress. Having wanton thoughts about a man is undoubtedly sinful but leading the life of a fallen woman is something else entirely. Nevertheless, falling into Sir Nicholas’s arms might just prove to be an invitation too tempting for Abigail to ignore. One thing is clear, whether she’s a governess or mistress, she must not lose her heart...

I came across this book while looking for some short reads for Valentine's Day. I enjoyed reading this book. Ms. Bennett's writing flows nicely and the story was easy to follow.Yes, the story is a bit far-fetched for the time period, but it's a lovely fantasy. Who knows? Something like this could have actually happened. The hero is an unapologetic rake. With him, you know exactly what you're getting yourself into. I wanted to not like him, but he didn't lead the heroine on. He was honest with her and told her what he wanted from her. Of course, to give us a happily ever after, he later changes his mind about the nature of their relationship. The governess was a woman who knew what she wanted and wasn't afraid to go after it. She had a bit more experience than I like my historical heroines to have, but...
My biggest complaint is the story is too short. I liked these characters. I wanted to read more about them and see their relationship develop into something more mature and lasting. When did the hero and heroine fall in love? I realize, like most women, the heroine got caught up in her feelings after being intimate with the hero. What I didn't see was a specific event in which he clearly started seeing her in a different light. I read about sex, sex, sex, and suddenly she gets offended and runs away. Then, boom, he loves her and wants to marry her. Slow down and get to know each other.

An Improper Governess An Improper Liaisons Novella Book 2 edition by Amy Rose Bennett Romance eBooks Reviews
I enjoy a good racy read as much as the next girl, and on that note, Ms. Bennett delivered. The sex scenes were graphically depicted, and quite well done.
What did bother me a bit was the main character. First, her name. Abigail Adams. All I could think about was the American first lady whenever I saw her name. Second, the only characteristic that came across was the prettiness of the heroine. Nothing about her personality resonated with me. The hero was equally as gorgeous, which seemed to be all that mattered to the heroine.
This was an excellent, and quite fast, read, and if the character development had shown more of the h/h's personalities, I would have given it 5 stars.
I gave it a three star rating because I suppose it’s decent for what it purports to be.
I just enjoy more story, but it was described as erotica, so, to be fair, my fault for trying it.
But the characters are pretty one dimensional, so perhaps better described as an erotic romp rather than an actual story with character and plot development.
Hedgecombe Village, Sussex - 1819
Miss Abigail Adams, age 25, is walking through Hedgecombe Priory’s cemetery when she is stopped by the vicar, Mr. Elias Wentworth. Having know the man for a mere six months, she is shocked when he declares himself to her and asks for her hand in marriage. Pulling away from him, she says that she must return to her duties as the governess to Miss Lavinia and Miss Kitty. They are the daughters of the widowed Lady Regina Barsley and they reside at Hatfield Hall. Abigail also mentions to the vicar that Sir Nicholas Barsley, age 29, will soon return to the Hall. He is a Baronet and Lady Regina is the widow of his brother. She has been living at the Hall with her daughters since her husband’s death.
On her way back to the Hall, Abigail is rushing to outrun a storm. As torrential rains start, a man comes by on his horse and pulls her up to ride with him to the Hall. Upon arrival, she is embarrassed to have been caught out in the rain and is scolded by Lady Regina. She is even more embarrassed to find the man who rescued her is Sir Nicholas whom she has never met before. Sir Nicholas is furious when he find that Lady Regina has given Abigail a tiny, unheated room on the upper floor, so he issues orders that Abigail is to be placed in a nice room and a bath be drawn for her. Lady Regina is furious that Abigail is being treated so well by Sir Nicholas. He, in turn, is angry at her for her for treating Abigail so badly.
When Lady Regina decides to take her daughters to Brighton, Sir Nicholas requests that Abigail remain at the Hall to catalogue his library.
When an attraction sparks between them, passion cannot be denied.
This is a very clever story. I always enjoy books about governesses. While I admit that it was a bit too racy for my tastes, I think the author wrote an overall great book.
