This book gets right into the meat of what you need to do to become a board member. It's a process, and often a long one. As CEO of a firm that helps women get on boards, I asked Tracy to do a webinar for us to highlight the key points in this book. I think a lot of candidates don't realize that you need a well-executed plan to get that first board seat. This give you a good map to start your process.
The book is too simplistic. It is intended as a resource and a quick guide but its contents is shallow and too generic as to be at any practical use.
Tracy Houston's "Becoming a Public Company Director" is an excellent primer for those who want to gain their first Board seat, as well as existing directors who want to expand the number of Boards on which they sit. Practical and concise, this book is a must read for anyone who wants to sit on a public company Board.
Very succinct and clear writing style. This guide is very easy to understand and lays out a plan of action for anyone considering a public board seat.
I ordered by mistake and there is no option to receive a credit. I do not want this. I don’t own a KINDLE! Please help!
Many executives have the dream of becoming a board director. Unfortunately, most of them are not prepared nor have the commitment to really give it all - whatever it takes to serve on a board.
This book opens some eyes for the ambitious executive seeking a board seat. My advice do it only if you have the time and passion. Try a board seat for 2 years at a non-for-profit organization and then you could make the jump.
After 30 years of federal service I am now exploring my "post-retirement" career opportunities and recognize that I must learn some new perspectives. As I began to explore board service, and reaching out to experts such as Tracy Houston, I came across her excellent publication titled "Becoming a Public Company Director". This is a quick and logically sequenced read with excellent links to informative resources on both the board process and the legal background, with the intent to help the reader understand and develop a strategy and assess the risks towards making this career step. The text reflects a practical approach to becoming a public company director - I will now begin to test the strategy!!!
